On Tuesday, Oct. 6, A$AP Rocky put his name on a four-year, full-tuition scholarship for one student entering the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment at Long Island University's Brooklyn campus. The Harlem rapper said the money is meant to help one young person "turn that vision into something real," and the application window closes Dec. 15.
Twelve days after his announcement, Missy Elliott brings four HBCU marching bands to Norfolk State University for a battle of her own design. The same week in Virginia includes a summit built for high school seniors. Neither event involves a lottery or a fan contest, and both reward the students whose paperwork is finished early.
For a senior applying to college this fall, Rocky's award is a single seat at a private university that lists tuition and fees at more than $45,000 a year. Applying costs nothing beyond time, but knowing what the scholarship pays for, and what it has historically left out at this school, is part of applying well.
What Rocky is paying for, and who can apply
The award goes to one first-time freshman enrolling at the Roc Nation School for the fall 2027 semester, and applications are submitted through LIU's dedicated portal at apply.liu.edu/rn before the Dec. 15 deadline. Transfer students and current LIU students fall outside that definition, so a student taking a gap year or switching schools should confirm eligibility with admissions before investing time in the application.
According to the announcement, the package pairs four years of tuition with one-on-one mentorship from industry professionals and automatic entry into Roc Nation's academic and mentorship program. The winner also gets hands-on hours in the school's Dolby Atmos studio. Previous artist-named awards at the school asked applicants to answer short prompts in writing or on video. DJ Khaled's 2023 award capped videos at three minutes and asked students how the scholarship would help them become the best version of themselves.
The portal will show Rocky's exact prompts, and a student who drafts answers in November rather than December leaves time for a teacher or counselor to read them. The scholarship sits on top of admission to LIU, so the college application itself has to be complete for the scholarship to mean anything.
The Donors that came before him
Rocky joins a list that started with Megan Thee Stallion, who funded a four-year, full-tuition award at the school in 2021 and said at the time, "Getting an education is incredibly important to me." NBA All-Star LaMelo Ball followed with a scholarship aimed at students headed into sports management and marketing.
DJ Khaled added his in 2023, and producer and engineer Gimel "Young Guru" Keaton, who directs the school's Music Technology, Entrepreneurship & Production program, has now funded two. His most recent, announced July 1, 2026, covered students entering this fall and included the chance to shadow him through the academic year. "Education and mentorship have always been at the heart of everything I do," Guru said when it opened.
Underneath the celebrity awards sits a larger program that most applicants never hear about by name. When the partnership was announced in 2020, LIU said the Roc Nation Hope Scholarship would cover full tuition for 25 percent of each incoming class. Recipients were to be drawn from academically competitive New York freshmen with the highest financial need. A student who applies for Rocky's award and lands in that need category may be considered for both, which is a question worth asking an admissions counselor directly.
What full tuition meant for the first class
In 2025, Gothamist interviewed at least a dozen Hope scholars from the school's inaugural class who said they owed LIU between $5,000 and $39,000 after receiving offer letters saying they would graduate without debt. LIU's marketing chief, Jackie Nealon, told the outlet the scholarship covered tuition only and allowed students to graduate "tuition debt-free," with university fees and housing billed separately.
New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection opened an investigation after that reporting, and an agency spokesperson urged students who believed they had been harmed to contact the department. The school has kept recruiting, and the celebrity awards have kept coming, including two since the story ran.
The university's financial aid disclosures list undergraduate tuition and fees at $45,018 for 2027-28, and housing, meals, books and transportation in Brooklyn sit on top of that line. Rocky's announcement describes the award as tuition plus mentorship and studio access, and it does not mention fees or a dorm.
A finalist who receives an offer letter should ask the financial aid office for a written breakdown of every charge on a full year's bill. The same document should show which charges the scholarship pays and which ones the family will owe each semester. Housing is where families most often discover the difference between tuition and the full cost of attendance.
Artist money that travels to other campuses
Most celebrity scholarships are tied to one school, but the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund, which Jay-Z started with his mother, Gloria Carter, follows the student. Its grants are paid directly to the college the student attends and can be renewed each year through graduation, covering tuition along with books, lab fees, travel and some living costs.
The 2026-27 application required applicants to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, 25 or younger, with a grade point average of at least 2.0, and it closed April 30. The fund notes that most first-time recipients carry GPAs between 2.0 and 3.0, so a senior who missed the cut for merit awards still has a realistic shot next spring. Every scholar is expected to do community service and mentor younger applicants in return.
Norfolk, Oct. 18: four bands and a summit for seniors
Missy Elliott's HBCU Band Battle puts Norfolk State's Spartan Legion, Virginia State's Trojan Explosion, Elizabeth City State's Sound of Class and Hampton's Marching Force on the same field on Oct. 18. Norfolk State held the top spot among Division I programs in Sports Illustrated's September HBCU band poll, and Virginia State led Division II.
I will be in the stands for this one. My son, Jaidin, is a sophomore in Virginia State's Trojan Explosion, and this season he plays cymbals on the drumline. He also writes music for his line, so possibly some of what Virginia State carries onto that field on Oct. 18 cam from him.
Band, and music more broadly, is where his energy lives and where he flourishes. Families raising a student like that learn that the college search runs through the band room as much as the admissions office. The right program can turn the thing that filled his weekends into the reason he shows up for class.
Elliott, a Portsmouth native, has her own history with the host campus. In October 2022, the Spartan Legion and the other three bands in this lineup marched in the ceremony that renamed a Portsmouth street Missy Elliott Boulevard. Two months later she gave Norfolk State's fall commencement address, received an honorary doctorate and gave the university $20,000.
She said she wants this year's event to be "something that inspires the next generation to dream even bigger." The same week includes the Missy Elliott Innovation Summit, an educational program for college students and high school seniors covering technology, music, entrepreneurship and education. For a senior with a camera, a beat tape or a business plan, that summit is the stronger reason to make the trip.
The bands on that field are themselves a scholarship path. Norfolk State's band scholarship process asks students to be accepted to the university, complete the FAFSA with Norfolk State listed and pick any major. The audition covers scales and a prepared piece, and percussionists play a snare solo. A trumpet player in Buffalo or a drummer in Hempstead (NY) can start that process from home, since the program has run its auditions virtually.
What to finish before December
The FAFSA for 2027-28 opened Oct. 1, and the band scholarship at Norfolk State will not move without it. New York seniors are also covered by the state's universal FAFSA requirement. The form their school is already pushing is the same one that opens state and federal aid for whatever a named award leaves uncovered.
For Rocky's award, the practical sequence is a completed LIU application, a finished FAFSA, prompt answers drafted early and reviewed by an adult, and a submission well ahead of Dec. 15. Students drawn to the band route should book a Norfolk State audition while the fall is still open. Families weighing either offer should get the full bill in writing before anyone signs a housing contract.
